When Addiction Wins the Battle… But God Still Wins the War

One of the hardest parts of ministry and recovery work is walking beside people through both victory and heartbreak. Recently, Life Line Housing experienced one of those heartbreaking moments when one of our participants failed a drug test.

Watching the test results appear positive for multiple substances was devastating.
There are no words to fully describe the heartbreak that comes with seeing someone you care about struggle again with addiction.
When you walk closely with people, pray with them, encourage them, and hope with them, moments like this affect everyone involved participants, staff, volunteers, and the entire support system.
But recovery is not always a straight line.
Sometimes people stumble. Sometimes addiction pulls harder than expected. Sometimes healing takes longer than anyone hoped for.
At Life Line Housing, we have rules and boundaries in place not to punish people, but to protect everyone involved, participants, staff, volunteers, and the integrity of the program itself.
Safety matters. Accountability matters. Structure matters.
These boundaries exist because we care deeply about recovery and the environment needed for healing.
Although this participant is no longer currently active in the program, we immediately referred them to ADAC so they can receive additional support and resources. Our hope and prayer is that after maintaining 30 days of sobriety, they may be able to rejoin the program in the future.
Because while addiction may have won this battle, we do not believe it wins the final war.
We still believe in redemption. We still believe in healing. We still believe God changes lives.
And most importantly, we still believe in grace.
The Bible reminds us again and again that forgiveness, mercy, and restoration are at the heart of who God is.
📖 Scriptures on Forgiveness & Grace (NIV)
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”— Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”— 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”— Matthew 18:21–22 (NIV)
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”— Psalm 103:8 (NIV)
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”— Romans 8:1 (NIV)
“Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes”— Proverbs 24:16 (NIV)
Recovery ministry means celebrating victories, but it also means standing in the painful moments without giving up hope. It means loving people enough to uphold boundaries while also praying for restoration.
Today our hearts hurt. Today addiction won a battle. But we believe God is still writing the story.
Please continue praying for this individual, for all those battling addiction, and for the strength and wisdom of everyone involved in recovery ministry. We believe healing is still possible, and we believe God’s grace is bigger than relapse.
One day, we hope to welcome this person back with open arms and a testimony of restoration. Until then, we will keep praying, keep believing, and keep trusting God with the outcome. 💙
